And it’s finally done!! As always, the JPEG images have weird coloring but in the PDF files that I submitted I absolutely LOVE how these ended up turning out! I only had peer reviews from two other students instead of three but I really took what they said and tried to apply it. With the second ad, one of my critiques was about the copy being hard to read (font issues) and that maybe I could put it at the bottom in a white square if it were in a magazine. I was thinking about doing that and if that were a situation that I was in, I definitely would have utilized that idea. But because I already had most of my advertisement laid out, I wanted to stick with what I had been working with. One of my critiques with the first ad had to deal with the centering of the copy instead of having it aligned left, I took this critique and applied it. Also dealing with the first ad, I changed the text for the bottom left corner to match the GoPro font just as I had in the second ad. I don’t have any interest pitching these to GoPro because I feel like their ads are already super effective for their target audience and I don’t think they want an amateur Photoshop student messing with what works. For future students I would recommend really knowing what your trying to accomplish before you start creating everything. There’s always room for improvement! Really excited to keep expanding my photoshop skills with this class!
It can only get better from here right? My first draft of my advertisement I had obviously misunderstood the purpose of the assignment. I was missing various key elements (body copy, website link) which was an error on my part and now I can see that my advertisement is slowly (very slowly) coming to life. I like that the headline is in that technology style GoPro font because it hints at consumers the product that I am advertising. The thing that I am unsure about is the body copy font. I can’t quite pinpoint which font gives the advertisement a cohesive structure. I tried finding something that looked typewriter-esque but that didn’t seem to flow well with the rest of the advertisement. I like how simple the font I chose for the body copy is but because my goal is to get the consumer to actually read it, I don’t know if it serves its purpose. I did realize when I went back to edit for my second draft that I like how vibrant the colors in the sky advertisement are rather than the underwater one. Can’t wait to continue working on these!
I sat and stared and rattled my brain while trying to decide which print challenge I was going to do. All of the examples given were incredible and my thought process became “Whatever I decide to do, it won’t be nearly as good as this one.” Then I remembered that I am a mere college student and that my work will be critiqued so that maybe one day I can create something that is just is as good as the examples given, if not better. GoPro cameras are designed for adventurers. They cater to explorers and those who want to document moments that they previously didn’t have the ability to record. These advertisements really reach out to those risk takers. They show people doing adventurous activities such as snorkeling and skydiving and the added element of the GoPro shows them that they can relive these incredible experiences by re-watching them on their GoPro.
Okay, so I realize my title makes it seem like I was drunk while doing this assignment but it was supposed to be a pun for Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love.” So for clarification purposes, I want you to know that I did this at 4pm on Wednesday and I really hope you don’t think I was drunk when I did it. Regardless, I realized that I should have done this assignment first because it was way less difficult than designing the book cover. The only thing I really had trouble with was the clipping path. Other than that speed bump throughout the creation process, I like how the final copy turned out. Beyonce is a style icon. The text behind her is the speech she gave after receiving the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Fashion Icon award. Because her speech is talking about fashion and how it has impacted her life, it was only natural to have the text wrapped around an image of her looking absolutely fabulous at the Grammy’s. This assignment made me take a deep breath and realize that my InDesign skills might not be completely hopeless.
Photoshop was an absolute dream to work with once I became more accustomed to its features. I had assumed that InDesign would be just as enjoyable but Dear God was I wrong. I have never been so frustrated with an application, but after four hours of messing around with it, here was was what I came up with. The Great Gatsby is a story about love, wealth, and scandal. The dark red background idea came to me when I was thinking about the themes that F. Scott Fitzgerald presents in this novel. The overall serious tone in this book doesn’t call for a bright cover, but rather complementary, darker hues. Jay Gatsby presents himself elegantly and professionally to everyone he meets. These qualities are how I chose the background pattern. It’s classic, it’s simple and it really catches your eye. The gold font paired with the single string of pearls showcases the wealth of the characters that this book is about. This is not just a random set of colors and designs that I threw together. While I was making this, I thought of what a wealthy person in the 1920’s might be intrigued with as well as the setting of this story. I do like how this turned out, but I know that if was more acquainted with InDesign, it could have turned out a lot more professional looking.
Ahhhh. Taco Bell. My late night weakness. Despite how disgusting its reputation may be, nothing can keep me away from a T-Bell quesadilla when the clock strikes midnight. This quesadilla has the gooiest cheese, the creamiest jalapeño sauce, the crispiest tortilla, and the most delectable “not quite meat” meat. Somewhere in between that formula I fell in love. It also might be the worst thing to put through your digestive system and definitely isn’t anyones healthiest option but I’m only twenty so right now I don’t really care. Anyways, this challenge allowed me to play around with Photoshop more than the last one did. I can honestly say I didn’t use a tutorial for this assignment and I think that I’m becoming a bit more comfortable with the application. On this graphic, I changed the background behind the quesadilla from green to purple so that I could reflect the restaurants colors that I was representing. The only other thing I really did was change the word “quesadilla” to the words “510 calories” which took a little toll on my self esteem but besides that I’m satisfied with how this turned out.
Stranger Things is easily one of my favorite TV shows. From the soundtrack to the acting to the storyline, I successfully watched the 1980s-esque series in two days. With that being said, I could not wait to get started on this challenge. This is the first time I have ever worked with Photoshop and thanks to a little frustration, a little patience and a Youtube tutorial, I’m pretty proud of it. I am an Executive member for OU’s Habitat for Humanity so the first thing that came to mind when you said title card was to make a title card for an organization that I hold close to my heart. OU’s Habitat for Humanity is a chapter that is part of a national organization that fights to improve substandard housing in communities across the nation. Thanks to this assignment, we are now going to use this graphic on our social media accounts. I absolutely cannot wait to learn more about this graphic design application!
Yes prescription glasses wearers, I’m talking to you. I know it’s summer, and I know the daily struggle between wanting to protect your eyes from the sun or wanting to be able to see the person standing in front of you. Which one do you bring? Prescription glasses or Sunglasses? Breathe. You now have one less problem in the summertime thanks to Ray-Bans Prescription Sunglasses. Now you can see what’s going on in front of you while protecting your eyes from the sun with our polarized lenses. All you have to do is add your prescription when ordering. Best of both worlds right? Don’t be afraid of summertime. Embrace summertime. #NeverHide
The purpose of the product is simple. Instead of glasses wearers having to decide if they want to see that day, decide they wanna look cool, or maybe they just decide they’ll carry both pairs around to save their peers from their complaining, they get two benefits out of one product. They no longer have to worry about where they’re going to put one pair if they end up bringing both. I personally wear these glasses all the time and they are a lifesaver. No more not being able to read anything and being the punchline of an “aren’t you blind” joke. I can now see clearly while I’m driving now even when the sun is shining right in my face. This makes a safer road for me and you both so Ray-Ban made an amazing product that I can proudly stand behind.
I look around in pure awe. Same feeling, same realization each time I’m here. It’s hectic all around me but some how I’m at ease. Theres buildings, sirens, people, signs, stores, music, lights all around me. I hear the banging of quarters in a cup as a man sits, begging for spare change. Noise all around me. There’s diversity here. Not just diverse people, but diverse places. Walk North down Michigan Avenue and you’re on a beach. Not the ocean, but who really needs the ocean when you have a city in the background. Chicago, you have my heart.
Like I touched on in my design post, I’m no stranger to Wrigley Field. Chicago, Illinois is my favorite place in the world and nothing gives me more joy than describing my feelings towards this city. “It’s a cleaner New York,” said anyone whose ever been to the two. Well, I have only been to New York City once, but, “a cleaner New York,” is not the one sentence I would use to describe my happy place. It’s noisy, it’s hectic, and while it’s not the safest place in the world, it holds a special spot in my heart. This summer I went to Lollapalooza, a music festival in Chicago, and the fact that hundreds of thousands of people were able to watch their favorite bands in an area that could accommodate everyone was a beautiful thing to witness. I think the craziness of Chicago is what really draws me to it and I can only hope that I will have the opportunity to live there one day.
Are you sitting at home? Maybe staring at your TV, flipping through channels with your boring TV remote? Wanting to spice up your relaxation with a device that has a less intimidating name than remote? Look no further. All your problems are about to be solved with The Flipper. I want you to just try and be angry and say, “pass me The Flipper.” You can’t! So why wait? Make the switch and ditch the remote. It’s time to make TV time more fun!
Remote is such a harsh word. The purpose of a remote is simple, so it’s name shouldn’t make it seem scarier than it is. As we all know, a remote is something that you use to control another device. When using the remote to control a television, you are wanting to change the current state that your television is in. When you are watching TV, you flip through various channels, flip input settings, or flip the volume higher or lower. Because of that sentence, that action, I think that the word flipper more accurately describes the remotes purpose. The two p’s roll off the tongue easier than the word remote does, and as I hinted in my copy, flipper is just more fun to say. I’ve personally always known the remote as a flipper/clicker and not a remote so this assignment was a no brainer when I was deciding what thing to rename.
